Cleaning a bathroom can be tiresome and time-consuming. Most people use standard cleaning equipment and generic detergents to clean their bathroom and toilet. This tends to work alright, but the job can be done far better with the right knowledge and skills. The following tips will allow you to clean your bathroom like a professional and improve the hygiene of your home.
Bathroom cleaning tips
Bathtub and basin - Let’s start with the ceramic objects, such as the bathtub and basin. These can become greasy and grimy if left uncleaned for a few days. They can also get stained from copper in the pipes, so try to clean them every day to prevent the green/blue streaks from settling in. You will need the following equipment and detergents:
Bucket
Sponge
Dishwashing liquid
Baking soda (not baking powder)
Clean cloth
Run the hot tap and splash the entire bathtub or basin to wet them. Partly fill a bucket with some hot water too.
Add a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid to the bucket of hot water. Dishwashing liquid is the perfect product to break down grease and grime.
Sprinkle some baking soda onto the bathtub or basin surface.
Soak the sponge in the bucket and start scrubbing the surfaces of the tub and basin.
Once the grime and stains have been removed, rinse the bathtub or basin with fresh, cold water.
You can also scrub the taps, drain and handles. Polish them with a clean, dry cloth once finished to keep them shiny.
Shower - Next, here are some tips for cleaning the shower. Tiled showers can also become grimy and moldy if left uncleaned. In addition, glass shower doors can become caked in lime - that hard white substance that stains in droplet shapes. You will need the following equipment and detergents:
Spray bottle
White vinegar
Baking soda
Sponge
Microfibre cloth
Wet the glass doors by splashing them with water.
Fill the spray bottle with white vinegar and spray it directly onto the glass. Leave it to stand for 10 minutes.
Dip the sponge in dry baking soda and start scrubbing the glass doors.
Rinse the clean glass with water and dry it off with the dry microfibre cloth.
Shower tiles can be cleaned in the same way as the bathtub.
Mirror - Cleaning the mirror is just as important as cleaning the shower glass. A filthy mirror can make a bathroom look unhygienic. It too can become stained with lime, but mirrors commonly get dirty from watermarks, soap, shaving foam and toothpaste. You will need the following supplies:
Half a cup of white vinegar
Half a cup of water
One tablespoon of cornstarch
Spray bottle
Microfibre cloth
Mix the above ingredients in the spray bottle and shake it well.
Spray the mirror with the mixture. Alternatively, use a glass cleaning product.
Use the microfibre cloth to wipe down the mirror. Ensure that there are no streaks left behind by wiping in and S-pattern from top to bottom. Do not use circular motions to clean the surface as this leaves streaks.
You can use crumpled newspaper to wipe down the mirror too, but this sometimes leaves tiny paper fibres on the mirror surface.
Toilet cleaning tips
The toilet is probably the most daunting object to clean for most people. It is often perceived as the most unhygienic household object, but this does not have to be the case if it is cleaned properly on a daily basis. You will need the following supplies:
Toilet cleaner
Disinfectant, such as bleach or Dettol
Toilet brush
Sponge
Paper towel (not toilet paper)
Cleaning gloves
Squeeze the toilet cleaner around the inside of the bowl and leave it to soak for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, spray the exterior surface of the toilet with disinfectant.
Put on some gloves and use the sponge to scrub the exterior of the toilet and be sure not to miss any spots. Dry the surface with some paper towel.
Use the toilet brush to scrub the inner bowl of the toilet. Flush the loo to rinse it.
These tips will allow you to clean your bathroom and toilet like a professional. Don’t forget to mop the floors and wipe down and tiled walls while you’re at it. Regular floor cleaner and a bucket will remove any dirt from your bathroom floors. If you feel like your bathroom or toilet needs a deep clean, do not hesitate to contact a professional contract cleaner. These services come in handy when moving into a new home and you are unsure of the cleanliness of these spaces.
