We are proud to announce that as of January 2022, 100% of all IWESCO employees have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19. IWESCO is mandated by the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) to provide a safe working environment for its employees and customers, and therefore consider it our duty to vaccinate against the virus.
We have a national footprint and consider our contribution important to rebuilding our economy as quickly as possible. As we are in the business of hygiene and cleanliness, it is our duty to ensure that all customers and their premises remain protected against the virus. As such, all of our staff members are vaccinated and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when sanitising customers’ premises.
While vaccinations do not make people immune to the virus and its variants, it certainly helps to lower transmission rates and the need for hospitalisation. Vaccinations will help with herd immunity against the virus and the restoration of the South African economy.
The narrative around vaccinations is shifting in South Africa as many large companies, such as Discovery and Sanlam, implement mandatory vaccinations for staff members. This is evidence of the growing support for the jabs. It is likely to become more common to deny access to premises and venues for individuals who are not vaccinated.
Views on the vaccination
Recent surveys have revealed that most South Africans are in support of vaccinations. Around 40% of citizens raise objections, including body integrity, potential allergic reactions, unknown long-term side effects and fertility. Some South Africans also cite religious or cultural beliefs that prohibit vaccinations.
There are certainly differing views on the virus and vaccines, all of which are valid according to the Constitution of South Africa. This supreme document protects the rights of people to make their own decisions on health and medical interventions. It also enshrines people’s freedom of religion and beliefs.
However, in some industries such as cleaning and sanitisation, the OHSA and Disaster Management Act assert that employers have a moral and legal obligation to provide a safe working environment for employees and customers, without risk to health. These regulations include measures to minimise the spread and risks of Covid-19 in the workplace.
IWESCO is proud of its 100% vaccination rate amongst staff members. We can already guarantee the safety of our customers and employees, but a complete vaccination rate is proof of our commitment to the health and safety of fellow South Africans.
