IWESCO is a contract cleaning and waste control company that operates across South Africa. We are specialists in our field and use environmentally-friendly business practices to build upon our social responsibility. We hold an ISO 14001 certification for environmental management and use this to guide our business towards a greener future.
Besides taking responsibility for our environmental impact, we also care about the communities in which we operate. IWESCO runs two community initiatives that improve the world around us for the benefit of all who share it. These initiatives are the Adopt a Road roadside cleaning programme and the National Environmental Consciousness Programme.
Adopt a Road community initiative
Adopt a Road is a nationwide anti-litter movement whereby South African businesses and individuals can sponsor the collection and removal of litter from a stretch of road. The programme encourages people to participate in, or fund, the waste removal process. Not only does this help to keep our highways and roads clean, but it also helps to preserve the environment along major intercity routes and popular roads.
A franchisee of IWESCO or one of our trusted business partners will perform the waste clean-up campaign using the funds raised through the initiative. The waste removal company contracted during the initiative will then take the litter to the relevant recycling facility or waste buy-back centre. We always aim for zero-waste-to-landfill, which means that the environment benefits greatly from the complete removal of glass, plastic, paper and metal waste.
The main goal of the Adopt a Road programme is to remove unsightly waste from the roadside before it can end up in local streams and rivers. During the rainy season, most of this waste also tends to block storm drains which causes flooding of the roads. Every piece of litter on the side of the road poses a threat to the environment and to the safety of road users.
National Environmental Consciousness Programme
The second community initiative that we take part in is called the National Environmental Consciousness Programme. In this initiative, 30% of the funds raised by participating businesses, like IWESCO, is used to finance environmental awareness campaigns in the media. Some of these funds also go towards establishing recycling programmes at schools, universities and office spaces.
Recycling at the source is a vital part of minimising waste in the environment. If we are able to get educational institutions to implement recycling stations and teach their students about the importance of recycling, then the future will be much greener for South Africa. Similarly, businesses and public spaces need to set up recycling stations and encourage their employees and visitors to make use of the recycling bins.
All of these efforts are aimed at reducing the sponsor’s carbon footprint and making an impact on the environment. South Africa should aim to recycle all of its waste - it is a collective effort that cannot be completed by just a small percentage of the population. This is why the National Environmental Consciousness Programme is such an important initiative.
These two programmes are intended to benefit society and the environment. They both strive for a cleaner South Africa that is eco-friendly and a better place to live for all citizens. IWESCO supports these two initiatives because they relate directly to our business as a contract cleaning and waste control company.
